Four Tet - “For These Times” (Forthcoming NONPLUS Boxset)
I mean, fuck. no one treats vocals quite like Four Tet. cannot wait for the full version and to pre-order a copy of the 5x12” boxset on March 29th.

no bullshit - this 15 or 16 or whatever year old producer - tore up this Four Tet original into something pretty f’in heavy. industrial clangs and Berlin-ready thumps pummel what’s left of Kieran’s palate, turning the sprawling original into a concise banger. the 12” is out now on TEXT, backed with a remix by Jamie XX. scoop.
here is the first taste of FaltyDL’s upcoming LP for Ninja Tune channeled through Four Tet’s rose-tinted lens. “Straight and Arrow” borrows vocal snippets from You Stand Uncertain and weaves them with some new, typically excellent cuts from Drew-knows-what dusted record (or YouTube video). Four Tet keeps the track grooving with a chunky bassline and shuffling hi-hats; a strong remix as always from Kieran, but I can’t help but wonder if he’s getting a bit bored of producing house music. Maybe 2013 will find him revisiting folktronica?
Happa welds Kieran’s rubbery “Jupiters” into an ironcast bull of a techno riddim on this (hopefully soon to be pressed) remix. according to the ever-trustworthy internet, this dude is only 15. fair play, mr. happa - going outside and being social at that young age is way overrated; stay indoors, bang out more tunes like this, and we’ll forget all about Blawan. check out “Freak” and “Boss,” two original Happa productions, after the jump.

Stunning drop today from Caleb Waterman, the artist who’s debut on Four Tet’s Text imprint turned some heads for its wintry, twinkling take on 2-step. Under the name Juk Juk, he’s come forward with his second release, this time inaugurating the vinyl-only NOMMOS label with “Unwrap” and this stellar B-side, “Fall”.
A darker side to his sound that was hinted at with growling, throwback basslines in his Text release, “Fall” features some haunting vocal refrains over a swinging beat that just begs to be spun on a midnight dancefloor. The hardcore-referencing bass adds another degree of menace when it kicks in, sending us down the rabbit hole towards a 6am crash & burn scenario. I really like this track, if you can’t tell.
Scoop it here, a worthy first entry for NOMMOS.

We know, we know….we just wrote up Kieran Hebden’s exquisite retwisting of Radiohead’s “Separator” last week, but when the music is fresh, you need to put the cookie tray out and let those fumes waft into every corner imaginable…
This new number, entitled “Locked”, sees Four Tet injecting a bit of sweat-infused wooden percussion into his work…with that trademark touch of lovingly sweet melodies caressing the higher frequencies. There’s also a bit o’ wobble bass in there! Whodathunkit. Out in September on his increasingly strong Text imprint, these will go fast like everything else the man has put his name to, so stay vigilant, chitlins.
Four Tet revisiting his Rounds style on this latest Radiohead remix…classic. A satisfying blend of acousmatic rhythms with washes of Eno-esque pads stretch TKOL finale, ‘Separator,’ into a mesmerizing, seven minute meditation. This is one 12” I’m happy I pre-ordered sight-unheard - maybe if you prowl the interwebs you can find some spare copies…Good Luck.
Ramason Soundman remixed ‘Good Morning Mr. Magpie’…and the result is underwhelming at best. Why David Kennedy did no more than re-contextualize Radiohead into his tried-and-true sonic template is beyond me, but maybe Hessle heads will get down to this:

…and Lone transformed the dark, erratic ‘Feral’ into a sunburned funk jam that might put Thom Yorke on some summer playlists…for the first time ever:

Pictures Music is set to release their second offering of the music of James Welch, who composes delightfully exotic electronic tunes under the guise of Seams. His initial Tourist EP was a digital only affair that struck a chord due to its lovingly crafted melodies wafting over arid, foreign-grown percussion…the music was warm with human flourishes and found sound sampling whilst maintaining a steady narrative groove to sink your teeth into.
Focus Energy/Motive Order by seams
The Pictures Music label, a growing home to up and coming artists like Lapalux, Koreless, and Dauwd, has decided to use their 8th release proper to showcase Seams’ next phase of production. “Focus Energy” pits 8-bit harmonies against each other in a battle for melodic dominance over a swung beat and grit-laden bassline. Taking the palette of past Zomby works and injecting an emotive, Four Tet-indebted sense of emotion to the proceedings, Welch hits the floor with filtered, driving bass punctuated by layered diva samples to act as a colorful, yet melancholic response to the call of the 8-bit arpeggios.
A satisfying track that’s out on vinyl today and digital in a few weeks time. Pre-order here, discerning denizens!

We recently wrote up SP-33’s unveiling of an instrumental accompaniment to his Escape from tha Carter album, and as noted, we were very impressed with his interlocking soundscapes derived from John Carpenter’s 1981 classic. As interested as we are in this recent release, however, we Kortologists were simply floored by the thoughtfully plotted mixtape the man called Ezra has put together for us.
A hypnotic journey through rain-drenched alleys, snow-matted fields and the melancholic mind of a maturing producer, SP-33 has floored us with a mix consisting of some of our absolute favorites. Put together with care and delicacy, this is a mixtape for late nights and high quality headphones. Sink in, kids.

Four Tet just released a new remix of his stand-out opener ‘Angel Echoes,’ off of his latest LP, There Is Love In You, from ambient guru Jon Hopkins. The remix flips the vocals of the original, a jubilant whale-song of chopped samples, into a smooth, hesitant, and broken-hearted dirge. Coupled with an Eluvium-esque piano arrangement, the result is one of the best songs to take on an overnight train journey:
