Interview: Visionist

Visionist is Louis Carnell, a recent graduate and rising mover and shaker in the world of underground dance music. Based out of London, Carnell has been building his reputation over recent months with forthcoming releases on 502 Recordings and Left_Blank, which we had the pleasure to preview yesterday. Coming soon will be the first release on Carnell’s new label, 92 Points, featuring a vicious exercise in tribal percussion and warped urban voices called “Mr. 67”.

Mr.67 (92 Points) out now on pre-order. release date august 8th by Visionist

We spoke with the man they call Visionist to find out what makes this particularly ambitious London rude bwoy tick…

——————————————————————————————————————————————

The Kort: What’s your deal, location, the daily routine?

Visionist:  South London, I make dark bass music and sort label stuff.

K: How did 92 Points come about? Is this something you’ve wanted to do for a while?

V: I was out at Outlook festival last September and met quite few heads… then came back and created the idea. But it was a long process as these things are. Its currently 5 members: myself, foundational, both members of monster playground and the k system… all creating different music but the label is more about pushing artists we find dealing with future bass to experimental hip hop and 80’s lo-fi.

K: Tell us about your production process, any specific equipment, software, work routine you follow?

V: I use Fruity Loops. I can use Logic but Ima grime head, fruity loops has been good to me through the years so I stick with it. I use vsts, haven’t got any hardware but really want some. Usually start making some synth sounds after listening to music for inspiration, I’m very careful not to copy anyone. That plays on my mind alot but inspiration is cool, it’s necessary. Then I start up an 8 bar loop, hit the drop, and build out. You know when I’m feeling a tune cus my head be nodding. The Churchill effect lol.

K: How did you hook up with Ross at left_blank and Oneman at 502?

V: Well Left Blank just got at me on soundcloud, I met all the guys the other day. Good guys, so looking forward to that. With 502 I met Oneman at Outlook… my mates already knew him from booking him for events and stuff so I sent through my music and he liked it and that was it really. I just hope people like the release when it comes because thats the main question I get asked.

K: What’s on the horizon for the rest of 2011? Any artists you’d like to recommend, including some future 92 Points members?

V: Rest of 2011 defffo 2 release the mr67 tune on 92 points. Looking at Aug 1st for that one, 300 limited edition vinyl. Then got w.m.id on left_blank with my mate Lorca on b side with his tune hold back and a tune we done together called slapstikk. Just had my first release out with diskotopia. Can’t give a date on 502 release yet but near future. Doing some remixes, look out for them… so yea busy times! All i can say about other artists is soundcloud is a great site and people we’ve found have sent us some sick stuff so very excited about the label but there is no sound to 92 points like there is with some other labels as long as it somehow relates to what we all do we might be releasing it.
