i wasn’t a fan of Lapalux when I first heard his productions and his Brainfeeder release ‘When You’re Gone’ did nothing for me. Yesterday, the Essex-based produer dropped “The Hours” as a free single in advance of the follow-up EP, ‘Some Other Time’; I ignored the news - judging the proverbial book and such. today’s coffee and Hegel both recommended I give it a chance, so here goes: I dig this. the beat is as “post-dilla” as ever, but the lush pads blossom in a delicately constrained space with room for the smooth vocal sample to rise and fall with the compression ratio. nothing new, but good for autumn.
